Racing Tips & Gear Ratios
Burnout
Rev the car fully and shift into 1st gear....make sure you get tires heated to 100%
Staging
Drive the car up close to the staging (green) area. Stop and set your launch RPM. Now ease up to the staging area, just use your brake to slowly creep forward. You want to just turn the second light on (barely into the green). Now shift the car back into neutral.
When to Leave
On the Sportsman tree (street cars), you will want to leave when the third yellow light comes on.
On The Pro tree (pro cars), you will want to leave when the three yellow lights come on at once.
Launch
Shift into 1st gear and slam the throttle as hard and as fast as you can. You will have to practice and figure out how fast you can leave, how fast you can throttle the car and see what works best for you.
Different gear ratios and different horsepower ranges will greatly affect how your cars launch.
Bracket Launch
DO NOT launch the cars at full throttle, this will make your inconsistent.
When you have the car on the rev limiter, the RPM's are bouncing up and down. This will cause the car to leave at a different RPM every time, which results in inconsistent times.
You should set the RPM to just below the rev limiter so it is steady, that way you will leave at the same RPM each pass, giving you more consistent times.
Pick a launch point
Where you need to launch depends on whether you are using Super Charger, or Turbo. At this point, Super Charger (S/C) performs better in Street cars (Sennet, Python, Project Z, Carvero) The Vortex performs best with Turbo.
Suggested launch points
Street cars 2500 - 3500 RPM (For S/C) - Turbo you'll need to launch at 6000 rpms, or more depending on car.
Pro Stock 5000 - 5500 RPM
Top Fuelers 4000 - 5000 RPM
...you will have to find what works best for you.
Ratios
Once you've determined where you plan on launching the car, we can begin to do the ratios. Start with 1st gear. Raise it until you start to spin when you take off. Now slowly back it off .01 until you can launch the car without spinning. Make sure you run three to four runs after every change. Now we go to the last gear (not final gear...last actual gear you will shift into). Raise or lower it until you hit the rev limiter just as you cross the finish line. If you are doing the dragster or funny car, you will need to raise it a bit more so it hits the limiter a bit before the finish line. Middle gears, try to make them shift evenly. In other words, you want them to drop pretty much the same when you shift each gear.
I normally start at the last gear and work backwards....just easier for me. Here is how you do that: If you want the RPM to drop to 5500 and it drops more (say to 5000) then make the gear you are shifting out of larger (higher number...closer to the next gear) If it doesn't drop enough (say to 6000) then make the gear you are shifting out of smaller (lower number...farther away from next gear).
Once you have all of the gears shifting pretty even, you can go back and tweak them each by .01 up or down until you get them exactly where you want them.
Be patient, it takes a little time to get everything just right! Be sure to experiment with the launch RPM, how quickly you slam the throttle, etc. to see what works best for you.
As far as final gear, it's up to you whether or not you raise, lower or leave it where it is. Doing the ratios is exactly the same either way. That is another thing you may want to experiment with as you get used to tuning the cars. There are several different ratio guides out there. I suggest you read them all. It never hurts to try more than one option.
Resetting your ratios to default
If you mess up or simply want to reset the ratios to stock, simply go to the parts store, remove the gear box, make a couple of runs and then put the gear box back on. It will reset to the stock gearing.
I hope this helps get you on the road to a successful EV career!! See ya at the track!!
